Mistakes To Avoid When Using Web Templates continued
Using a template that is very popular and that many others are also using may be the most common mistake people make when using templates. Obviously, having other websites that look like yours detracts from your web site's uniqueness and credibility. Your site will take on the appearance of a generic, template based website with no originality.
The other side of this coin is customizing the template so completely that it no longer looks anything like the original template. Since the whole point of using a template is to save time and money, a total makeover of the template negates these savings and can actually end up taking more time than just building a site from scratch. You may feel good because you have created a unique and original site, but all effort and money savings are gone.
If you take the time to find and purchase a template that you feel is very suitable for your needs, the changes that need to be made may be few if any at all. For example, you may find a great template that suits your needs for a hobby site except the original designer has put an image of stamps in the header. If you are building a gardening hobby site, you can find images of garden plants and spades to replace the stamps and make the site relevant to the topic. Don't, however, use this image replacement as a springboard to a complete site redesign. Just make the necessary changes and go with it. That's what templates are for.
In some circumstances, some people simply make the wrong choice of templates. This is a very subjective issue but you have to be careful in selecting templates to suit your audience. Do not choose templates just because they are pretty, choose them because they serve your purpose.
